Author and hiking guru William L. Sullivan takes us on a tour of a dozen new or dramatically changed trails in the area between Salem and Bend, featured in the newly released fifth edition of his guidebook, "100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades." Included are a new path along the Deschutes River north of Bend, a new bird refuge trail at Salem, and several reopened trails to wildflowers in the Cascades. He’ll also discuss the effects of wildfires and the Forest Service’s new permit system. Along the way, expect anecdotes about local history, plants, and outdoor lore.

Sullivan is the author of five novels and a dozen books about Oregon, including the popular “100 Hikes” series, “Hiking Oregon’s History,” and “Oregon Favorites.” His journal of a 1000-mile hike he took across Oregon, “Listening for Coyote,” was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission as one of Oregon’s “100 Books,” the 100 most significant books in the state’s history.

The presentation will be in the community room at the Sisters Fire Station at 301 S Elm St Sisters, Oregon. Doors open at 6:00 pm and presentation will begin at 7pm.

    • Peterson Ridge Trail

The Sisters Stampede is an XC mountain bike race occurring each memorial weekend on Sunday.  It was spawned from the inception of a new, revised network of trails in the Sisters, Oregon area called the Peterson Ridge trail. The trails were built by the Sisters Trail Alliance, who are passionate about making this beautiful area accessible to cyclists, runners, and hikers. COTA (Central Oregon Trail Alliance) also plays a big part in the area helping to develop trails for mountain bikers made by mountain bikers.

This thrilling race course features stunning views of the Three Sisters Mountains, and rolling singletrack scattered with Central Oregon lava rock. This course is mainly singletrack which will test riders’ strength and stamina.

A very unique start/finish will be located just steps away from Three Creeks Brewing, which will be launching Stampede Ale earlier in the season for the event and will host the after-race party. Five Pine Lodge, which is on the same campus, will provide lodging. Camping is also available in the city park, just blocks from the start/finish line. In addition Blazin Saddles in Sisters will be hosting their annual block party and packet pickup.

$1000 Cash prizes for top three Men and Women – either Elite or Expert. Other category winners including Elite and Experts will get a Custom Stampede Belt Buckle for first, podium glassware from Three Creeks Brewing, a pound of coffee from Sisters Coffee and a Custom Tote Bag.  2nd and 3rd will get Custom Podium Glassware. First overall for the event will receive a nights stay at Five Pine Lodge in Sisters!

Medical personnel will be at the Start and Finish to treat minor scrapes and bruises, as well as an aid station on the course.

The Pacific Crest Trail Association, The High Cascade Forest Volunteers, Oregon State Parks and the Willamette and Deschutes National Forests invite you to attend the annual volunteer training weekend.  The sessions offered are designed to train new and returning volunteers.  The training weekend offers the opportunity to meet other people who are interested in working to provide quality recreation experiences for forest visitors.

The hours you spend at the training sessions, all the hours you spend volunteering for projects and your travel time to and from the training and projects are valuable to the Forest Service and the Pacific Crest Trail Association.

This training event is offered to volunteers free of charge, in an effort to inspire citizen stewardship of our trails.  In exchange, we suggest that you donate at least 16  hours of your time over the year volunteering on the many projects offered by the High Cascades Forest Volunteers and the Pacific Crest Trails Association.
